GOTCHABBY

 June 12, 2005
That was a day that will always be seared into my memory.
I was "looking" for a lap kitty.
I admit I had some attributes I was looking for.
I wanted a girl, I wanted her to be small, and I wanted her to look like Boo.
I was hoping to find a girl who liked laps too.
Because Boo,Ping and Jinx didn't.
***
I had been working with Lucky Cat Adoptions to find a tuxedo girl for me, and
find her they did.
When I walked into PetsMart that fateful day, there she sat, regally like
a queen, not a care in the world.
I look at her and fell in complete love.
I completely believe in eyes meeting across the room and falling in love.
I mistook her interest though.
Abby you see had never had it easy.
She was not an simple girl.
In fact Abby is a diva.
When I took her into my arm and she clung to me I totally misunderstood her signals.
She was telling me to take her HOME.
I thought it was my home, no she wanted to go to her home.
If you are not familiar with Abby's story, her former owners consisted of a Mom and Dad and 7 year old girl. Abby was the 7 year old's cat. She adored Abby and Abby adored her. The Mom loved Abby. The Dad hated her. He had made his 7 year old give her to his neighbor who worked with Lucky Cat to bring her to me specifically. BUT he said if I didn't want her to leave her behind PetsMart and NOT to bring her back.
What kind of monster Dad is that?
***
Needless to say, I of course took her.
But, what I had hoped would be a happy ever after (that day) was one filled with complete misunderstanding.
Abby was M-A-D.
She did not want to be in my home.
She wanted to go home.
She hissed at me, she swatted me and no doubt she would have bit me if I tried to touch her.
I cried at my failure and wondered what I had done.
***
Thankfully, 24 hours later and she was better.
She allowed me to hold her, even if she did nip me repeatedly.
Hard.
***
She did not tolerate the other cats and it took 6 long months of introductions.
(She still hates the other 4 cats)
But in those months when I would go and sit with her in her "room", she and I came to our understanding of each other.
She agreed to stay, and she would be my loyal companion as long as I promised never to make her leave and go to another family.
I accepted her terms.
***
She has rewarded me with total loyalty and devotion.
Now that is not to say she isn't a diva and she will do as she wishes.
But she is a single owner cat.
She simply owns me.
***
I love you Abby with all of my heart,
and I would not change a thing.
Even if you are a diva.
Happy Gotcha Day sweetheart.

  7. Happy gotcha day, Abby! What a MEAN human to just get rid of you like that, especially when his little daughter loved you so much. She is probably traumatized for life, as you were traumatized for so long having been taken away from her. I am glad that you have a human and a happy home now, and I can only hope that little girl grows up to have a whole bunch of kitties to love, far, far away from her awful father.

  24. Happy Gotcha Day Abby! You may not have known it, but it was a lucky day for you. We remember the story of the girl and her dad, and living with a man like that who hates you is no way to live. Mica Moo is the cat we thought would be fun and playful. She may not be what we hoped for but she is the one we have and she has other wonderful qualities, so we understand. We hope you and your mom had a wonderful day together!

  30. We gotted a little leaky reading that. We are happy you are together. And in spite of my contempt for and terror of Humans, secretly I *do* kind of like mine.

  31. Happy Gotcha Day Abby! We are sorry that you lost your first home, but happy that you ended up here. We have to believe that that awful man will get what he deserves. We do kinda like the idea of him coming back, again and again, as a mouse trapped in a house with lots of cats. Or similar.
