Google Reader

Just thought I would share this with anyone using the Google Reader who wonders what options are available:

Transitioning from Google Reader to feedly

Google announced today that they will be shutting down Google Reader. This is something we have been expecting for some time: We have been working on a project called Normandy which is a feedly clone of the Google Reader API – running on Google App Engine. When Google Reader shuts down, feedly will seamlessly transition to the Normandy back end. So if you are a Google Reader user and using feedly, you are covered: the transition will be seamless.

You can find more information at Feedly blog.

  1. I found this last night too on lifehacker. Feedly was seamless! I went on, within seconds it had all my blogroll! Awesome!

  2. You can as well transition to Skimr - http://www.skimr.co

  3. Our human staff had the same smooth experience transitioning to Feedly. Seems to work just as well as Reader and even looks nicer. RSS FTW!

  4. We had a look just now bur Firefox blocked it from downloading software to our computer. We thought we would wait until someone else had done it before we allowed it. Looks like we will be doing it now.

  5. There are other options, but this was the one I was leaning toward. I'll need to download it for both Firefox and Chrome, since I use Reader in both browsers.

I, too, was hoping someone who's done it would provide feedback first though. LOL. Looks like it's worked for Stacy, though most of mine are Reader subscriptions, not following via a blog roll. Hope it's just as seamless!

  6. That is good to know! I copied everything to NewsBlur when Reader had that outage a while back and at least I have something.

  7. we don't like the layout of feedly. we liked reader's layout. there is another site that is supposed to be like reader but import is down. we are going to give it a wee time as its been overwhelmed probably. i think its theoldreader.com

  8. Feedly does not have a version for Safari browsers on laptop Macs, which is what I generally use for the blogs I follow. Still in search of an alternative.

  9. Googlereader will be missed!!! I use Mac/ipad mostly, so looks like Feedly won't be any good unless they bring out a version for Apple pretty soon! Thanks for the info xx

  10. Thanks for the recommendation. The head peep is still evaluating the options, but it's good to hear that people are liking Feedly.

Two important things we need to get the head peep to test drive on some of these options are the mobile version and categories. Currently, we are keeping cat blogs on one account and 175 other blogs on another. Tossing them in together will be a mess, so being able to read only one category or the other from mobile and leave the other category unread for later is really important.

Or the head peep could just stop reading non-cat blogs. But she's not taking that suggestion well from us.

We'll give Feedly and NewsBlur a test drive once they have a chance to adjust to the traffic spike.

  12. Turns out our reading list is via the blogger dashboard, where we subscribed to follow the blogs we read. Apparently that is not going away. Relief!

  13. I prefer to follow by email. I find the reader difficult to manage probably because I am too simple minded LOL

  14. We're using bloglovin, thank cod, so we don't need to worry about the transition. But my cat, there are a lot of bloggers who are being affected by this!!!
