Finally Friday: Friday Cat Blogging

Abby
The other evening as Abby lay beside me she quietly slipped her little paw into my hand and slowly retracted her claws to hold on. She was purring softly as she did this. She was happy and purrerating. It warmed my heart ... and hers as well I believe.

Finally Friday

Miss Abby

When I saw this picture it took my breath away. Every so often an image comes together so beautifully, the composition, the look, the light, everything. I just knew when I took this picture that it was going to be one of my all time favorite images of my sweet little angel and it doesn't disappoint me.

As I was looking at this, a thought came; do cats ever have vain moments? We human obsess sometimes about how we look, do cats care? It got me thinking about how images are changed and sharpen and air brushed and photo shopped. Cats don't need any of that and I don't think they worry in regards to their 'image'. Cats grow gracefully and peacefully. I think I want to be more like Abby and just be happy with how am I right now...

Thanks Abby -- my ever so beautiful baby.

Finally Friday

Ping:
It's been a tough week, but I think I'm gonna pull through. I am still walking gimpy and not putting much pressure on my back left foot but everyday it gets a little better. I made it to breakfast and had my meal with Jinx and Gracie. I can stand up that long now. Before Momma was bringing my food to me which was nice but being a big mancat I needed to get up and go into the kitchen for my meals. I still can't jump up very well, but I am compensating by just taking small steps. I think I have finally turned the corner, but I overheard Momma saying if I'm not better really soon I will have to go back to the dreaded doctor again. I really don't want to go not that they weren't nice to me, but it's not the kinda place I like hanging out. Please keep me in your purrs I appreciate all the healing vibes I can get.

Happy Friday efurryone and now onto the cats....

Please Send A Purr For Ping

Yesterday when I got home from work, I noticed Ping wasn't at the door to greet me which is his ususal habit. When he didn't come into the kitchen when dinner was served made me know something wasn't quite right. There he was lying on top of the dining room table (yep they can all lay up there...they would do it if I weren't home so I have a quilt on top of the table to protect it). At first I thought he was just up there and wasn't very hungry, but the more I rubbed on him the more I got this feeling something wasn't right. Finally when I touched his left back foot he reacted and pulled it away from me then I realized something was terribly wrong. The back leg was trembling. He tried to get up and pull away from me and then I could see he wasn't putting any weight on it and he was favoring it. Well immediately a phone call to the VET (ours is a convenient 45 minutes away in afternoon work traffic -- that's what we get for living in the boonies) we popped Ping in the PTU(no easy feat as he didn't want to get in it) and off we went. Two and half hours later we find out NO broken bones (THANK bast) but he is hurting pretty bad. He was spectacular at the Vet's and they said he was so sweet when they pulled on him to get his xrays. But that's Ping. He is such a sweet little boy. There was a lot of ruckus amongst the other cats and I have to say Abby led the charge. That's another story and I have scratch marks to prove it! :-) All of the cats were upset. But Ping settled down last night thankfully the shot to make it easier to do the xrays also gave him some relief. He was hobbling this morning and he was hurting. I put his pain pill in his food and we decided to separate him in the new Playroom until his Dad gets home, which will be early today. He wasn't interested when I tried to tempt him with the food, but I am hoping that as the morning goes on he will want it and hopefully he will take the pill. Otherwise it will be traumatic to try and pill him, in fact I know with him it would be better not to try and force him to take a mild pain pill. So please send Ping a purr, he is feeling real bad today. No idea what he did, other than knowing our litte acrobat jumped and missed, but he missed really badly and he really hurt himself. The Vet said it could take up to two weeks to heal, but she thinks he probably pulled a tendon. Please keep our little boy in your purrayers...

UPDATE:
Ping is much better this afternoon his Daddy reports!
This is good news.

"I Want To Quit!"

by Joan Fremo

I want to quit!My health is bad. There are days I feel so terrible that I can barely move. My phone bills are outrageous, and I could have replaced my van with the funds I have spent these last 3 years---on animals that were not my own.

I want to quit!I spend hours and hours emailing about dogs. There may be 500 messages when I start---and at 4 AM, when I finally shut down the computer, there are still 500 emails to be read.

I want to quit!Gosh, I haven't the time left to email my friends. I can't remember the last book I read, and I gave up my subscription to my local newspaper---I used to enjoy reading it, cover to cover, but now it often ends up in the bottom of the squirrel's cage---unread.

I want to quit!I've spent days emailing what seems like everyone---trying to find a foster home, help for a dog languishing in a shelter---but his time has run out, and the shelter has had to euthanize to make room for the next sad soul.

I want to quit!I swear, I walk away from my computer to stretch my legs---let the dogs out---and come back to find another dog in desperate need. There are times I really dread checking my email. How will I find the funds, the help, to save yet another dog?

I want to quit!I save one dog, and two more take its place. Now an owner who doesn't want his dog---it won't stay in his unfenced yard. An intact male wanders... This bitch got pregnant by a stray... This 3-month-old pup killed baby chicks... The dog got too big... This person's moving and needs to give up his pet. I ask you, friends---what town, what city, what state doesn't allow you to own a pet?

I want to quit!I just received another picture, another sad soul with tormented eyes that peer out of a malnourished body. I hear whimpering in my sleep, have nightmares for days... Many of the "Breed People" don't seem to want to hear about these dogs. Breeders either don't realize, or just don't care, how many dogs of their breed are dying in shelters.

I want to quit!I just got off the phone. "Are you Pyr Rescue? We want to adopt a male to breed to our female." How many times do I have to explain? I have tried to explain about genetics, about health and pedigrees. I explain that rescue NEUTERS! I usually end up sobbing, as I explain about the vast numbers of animals dying in shelters across the country, as I describe the condition many of these animals are found in. I wonder if they really heard me...

I want to quit!It is not like I don't have enough rescues of my own to worry about--- but others have placed dogs improperly and aren't there to advise the new owners.

I want to quit! There ARE some unscrupulous rescues out there---hoarders, collectors, and folks who will short change the care of the animals to make a dollar. They save them all, regardless of temperament, putting fellow rescuer's and adopters at risk by not being truthful.

I want to quit!I have trusted the wrong people--- had faith and heart broken...

I want to quit!AND THEN...My dog, lays his head in my lap, he comforts me with his gentle presence---and the thought of his cousins suffering stirs my heart.

I want to quit!AND THEN...One of those 500 emails is from an adopter. They are thanking me for the most wonderful dog on earth---they cannot imagine life without their friend---their life is changed, and they are so grateful.
I want to quit!AND THEN...One of my adopted Rescues has visited a nursing home. A patient that has spent the last few years unable to communicate, not connecting---Lifts his hand to pat the huge head in his lap, softly speaks his first words in ages--- to this gentle furchild.
I want to quit!AND THEN...A Good Samaritan has found and vetted a lost baby, "I can't keep him, but I'll take care of him until you find his forever home."
I want to quit!AND THEN..."Jamie took his first steps holding on to our Pyr." "Joan, you should see this dog nursing this hurt kitten!" "I was so sick, Joan, and he never left my side..."
I want to quit!AND THEN...I get an email from a fellow rescuer, "Haven't heard from you in a while---you OK? You know I think of you..."
I want to quit!
AND THEN...A dozen rescuers step up to help, to transport, to pull, and to offer encouragement. I have friends I have never seen, but we share tears, joys, and everything in between. I am not alone. I am blest with family of the heart, my fellow Rescuers.
Just days ago it was a friend who shared her wit and wisdom, whose late night email lifted my heart. Sometimes it is friends who only have time to forward you a smile. Often, it is my friends who forward me the notices of dogs in need.
There are Rescuers who see a flailing transport and do everything they can do find folks to pull it together for you.
Rescuers who'll overnight or foster your Dog while you seek transport.
There are Rescuers not used to or comfortable with your breed, but who put aside their discomfort to help.
There are Rescuers whose words play the music of our hearts. Foster homes that love your Rescue, and help to make them whole again---body and spirit. Foster homes that fit your baby in, though it may not be their breed.
Rescuers whose talents and determination give us tools to help us.
Rescuers we call on for help in a thousand ways, who answer us, who hear our pleas.
Rescuers who are our family, our strength, our comrades in battle.

I know I cannot save every dog in need.

I know my efforts are a mere drop in a sea.

I know that if I take on just one more---those I have will suffer.

I want to quit!
But I won't.

When I feel overwhelmed, I'll stroke my dogs head while reading my fellow Rescuers emails. I'll cry with them, I'll laugh with them---and they will help me find the strength to go on.

I want to quit!
But not today.
There's another email, another dog needing Rescue.

This piece is dedicated, with love and gratitude, to all Rescuers.
This is dedicated especially to Jody.
What she does for all of those cats in and around the Albany, OR area is truly amazing.

Finally Friday

Momma was laughin at me. I only drink from the faucet, not that bowl the other cats drink from. In fact I have taught Momma a new trick. She can't take picture of me when I am doing my new trick though, because I make her cup her hands and I drink outta of them. I only do that in the bathrooms though because the faucet is too far away for me to reach. But, let me tell you why Momma was laughin at me. The other day she was filling up the dish where the other cats drink from and I was curious about what she was doing. So, she showed me the dish. I dunked my head into it and nearly drowned. Now why didn't she tell me that there was a buncha water in there? She watched me and let me put my head right into the water and snork up a whole bunch of waters into my nose and whiskers! I made all kinds of weird noises, and who wouldn't if you wuz drowin? Then you know what; she laughed at me! Umfgh...the indignity of it all! I showed her later though, I left her a nice little surprise, you know what I mean. Better watch where you step Momma...we'll see who laughs next!

Get your red dresses out, ladies, because Friday, February 1, is National Wear Red Day. Launched in 2002 by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in Maryland, Wear Red Day is a campaign to increase women’s awareness of heart disease.

Celebrate the kick-off to
American Heart Month and National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 1, 2008, by wearing red in support of women’s heart health.
The Red Dress—the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness—was designed to build awareness that women are at risk for heart disease, and motivate them to take action to reduce their risk. Follow The Heart Truth and learn about heart disease in women this February, and throughout the year, through a series of exciting events taking place across the nation!

Miss Boo: I hafta to update efurryone on Momma... she went to her V.E.T yesterday and drum roll please...she has lost a total of 51 pounds! They could not believe it and told Momma she looked 3 to 4 cat years younger, isn't that great? I am furry proud of Momma. All of her bad numbers are still good, so she is sticking to her plan and feeling terrific! Health at any age is impawtant, but as our Momma's age they hafta to be more careful and take care of themselves better so they can take care of us!

Ping's Treasure

Ping came running in from the back screened in porch and he looked like he had something in his mouth, but at that same moment Abby was having a scamper around the house, so I was watching her and once she was through I found Ping playing with his latest treasure. Notice that the lizard has lost his tail.

Every time one of the other cats would try to see what Ping had, he would growl at them. I have never seen Ping get upset with any of the other cats in that way. It was an interesting reaction on his part I thought.

Finally the fun is over. Mom takes Mr. Lizard away still alive and turns him loose outside.

Boo: Mommmmmm Abby is looking at me!

Luckily this is how it ended, just like it began. Abby being aggressive staring Boo down trying to bully her. It succeeds most of the time, because Boo is not aggressive in the least. She is such a sweet gentle lady. Abby just knows what she wants and she's not afraid to say it.

P-problems

Some mornings I just don't feel like myself. When I am not waiting for Momma at the bedroom door she knows I am having one of those mornings. Momma found me in my little nest right on top of my Gizzy quilt. She knew I wasn't feeling happy. I didn't try to even boss anyone around this morning and I didn't eat all that well. I let Momma love all over me and finally I scrunched down and scurried off as fast my little paws would carry me. You see I have this problem with poo. Every time I have these bad hurtie cramps, Momma keeps telling me it's because I am a Manx and my insides are a little different (well Momma my outside is a bit different too!). After I finished I race around like a wild gazelle and I run like the wind, no one can catch me, cuz my butt is on fire. Then I was back to my normal self, running things and kicking some kitty booties. I had my "A" game back on.
****
So hope you have your game face on because it's time to go and visit all the blogs this weekend showcasing all of us cats! Drop by and visit some of these great sites this weekend.
