Big Bad Noises

Uh oh ...

Annabelle: What on earth is all that racket Ping?

DO YOU SEE THAT MONSTER?

Wow all that dirt would be fun to play in, wouldn't it kitties?
Well, sorta of.
You see it caused a lot of commotion all around the house
for two days.

Some of us were bothered.
Some of us weren't.
Mom and Dad were left broke though.

Happy Gotchas!!!

Today is the day we celebrate the 11th Gotcha for
Boo, Ping and Jinx.

It was 11 summers ago that someone dumped, abandoned
and threw away 3 awesome cats nearby my home. That
was the summer/fall we had 5 hurricanes and tropical
depressions impact our area.
Bonnie, Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne,
all between 8/12 and 9/26.
It was not a good time to be an outdoor cat in Florida.

After being dropped off,
Jinx led them to the closest house, which was mine.
The three of them stayed together with Jinx being the head cat.

A few days later we found Jinx and Boo
on the front porch sleeping in a chair.
Boo ran and hid because she was afraid,
(given what she'd seen of humans, who
could blame her?)
 but Jinx calmly stayed put.
He wanted to eat!
So food is what he got and immediately Boo came back
to get some of the groceries
and then guess who jumped out of the bushes?
Ping!

It took a few months but one by one each of them
convinced me to bring them inside.
Which is where they wanted to be from the beginning.
Ping did have wander lust for awhile, and we did allow
him outside time only during the daytime.
Until Christmas Eve of 2004 that is, when he didn't come
home for 3 days.
Talk about being worried!
He got sick from being out in the cold,
and he was never allowed outside again.

They've been fantastic cats.
So each year as I always do I thank the person who
was didn't care enough for these three young cats,
you did unknowingly saved their lives.
You brought them to me.
I adore them and will always take care of them.
Perhaps you hoped that was what would happen.
I'd like to think that.
I'd like to think you didn't abandon them
to let them be harmed.
They weren't throw aways.
They are loved and well cared for.

Happy 11th Gotcha my sweet babies!

Friend or Foe

Alert alert red alert!

Jinx:
I've got the top deck covered Boo

Annabelle:
Where where where??

Ping:
shhhhhhhhhhhh...

there

Why it's our friend
Mr Kitty.
But he's in OUR backyard!

Annabelle:
I see him!

Jinx:
Me too where's he off to I wonder?

***
We'd like to thank our friend Katie Isabella
for the CREATIVE BLOGGER AWARD.

It asks that you share three things about
yourself:

(1) I have turned into a wall paper shredder
(2) I have to get my bottom washed quite often
(3) Mom hand feeds me my meals because
I won't eat if she doesn't.
~Annabelle

Thank you Katie for sharing this with me!

***UPDATE***

Yesterday Ping went back to the Vet.
This time for an X-ray.
The X-ray was perfect.
You could see every branch within in lungs,
the X-ray was that clear.
But, our Vet had some worry that his
heart was enlarged and so she
sent it out to read by a radiologist.
We heard back and they confirmed
Ping looks as good on the
inside as he does on the outside.
So we're still stuck with WHY?? has he lost
weight. WHY did Jinx lose weight last year?
We don't know.
But, for now we'll take Ping back for
a recheck in about 6 weeks.

Because you know how thankful we
are for the news on Ping!

Huh?

Just a quick UPDATE:
Gracie is doing well. She is eating, drinking and taking care of all things in the litter box. Medications are going down a little better. Most importantly her breathing is stable and to the eye "normal". I still think she has some fluid in her lung area, but she is so much better. Ultrasound on Tuesday.

Triple Gotcha

Ping

Jinx

Boo

Mr Jinx and Boo

Boo and Ping

Jinx

Jinx and Ping

It was the summer of 2004.
I remember hearing a cat's cry one evening while sitting in the den.
It wasn't an unusual event and I did not think any more of it.
Then one day not too many days later upon rounding the corner
to the front door what did I see but a gray tabby and
a black and white tuxedo cat asleep in the lounge chair.
When they saw me the tuxedo cat jump up and ran into the bushes.
The gray tabby just sat there and let me pet him.
I immediately went and got a can of tuna and
what happened?
A orange tabby jumped out from the bushes.
He was the most skittish.
What did we know about cats then?
ZERO!
I thought I could I have three outdoor cats and all would be well.
Little did I know.
Oh so little.
***
It didn't take long before it became too worrisome for me to leave me
outside, especially after the horror of the hurricane season that year.
We had 5 storms come through our area of Florida.
So we got them to come inside the garage.
Jinx and Boo were fine with that, but Ping, well Ping is an adventurer.
He liked the outdoors.
***
It didn't take long before Boo conned her way inside.
It seemed OK to let both boys stay out in the garage together.
(like I said what did I know?)
But then, and now we are closer to Decemeber as best as I remember,
Ping did not come home one night.
I didn't want Jinx out in the garage alone, so he came in.
The next night Ping came home and he too came inside as well, and that is how
three abandoned cats came to live a pampered indoor life.
***
I've said it many times, and I sincerely mean it. I thank the thoughtless, unkind idiot person(s)
who abandoned dropped turned loose left at my doorstep 3 young cats. They mean
the world to me and they are safe and happy, no thanks to you. Or maybe I should
say thanks to you they are safe with me.
I will never understand how someone could take three obviously indoor cats
and plop them outside away from whatever life they had before.
I guess, that too many people think cats can live well enough on their own
outdoors. NEWS FLASH: they can't. At least not for long.
But, that is another topic all together.
Today, I truly do celebrate our 9th GOTCHA.
We are all glad to celebrate it with you.
One more year of happiness in knowing we are all well loved
by our families and friends.
Thank you for stopping by and sharing it with us!

Let Me AT It

Mr Jinx is going to town on the shower doors trying
to get to the bouquet of roses.

Boo watches hoping she can sneak in.

Boo gives up trying to get through the shower doors
and goes off to visit her favorite spot.
MY closet!

Mr Jinx is still trying to figure out how to get to those flowers.
***
I can no longer leave flowers out because I have hungry kitties
who will devour them.
So best kept behind doors they cannot get past.

QUESTION:
Does anyone have any experience with the medication
ATOPICA?
A friend of ours who does not blog is considering giving this
to her kitty who has severe allergies.
Thanks!

Question About Metacam

Jinx was given 3 dosages of metacam.
You can see I don't even know from the "prescription"
what the dosage was.
It was in this syringe.
I believe it was filled up to 1.0mL
But I won't swear to that.
The Vet gave him his first dose Monday.
She told us to give him two more doses, one on Tuesday and
one Today. So, we did.
Things have been crazy at my house and I did not check
to see if there were any problems with metacam.
There are.
So, from my research today I found that a one time injection
of metacam is deemed fairly safe.
But repeated oral dosages are not.
Metacam is safe for dogs, and part of the problem seems
to be that Vets are giving "dog" doses to cats.
(my vet said she gave her own cat this medication because of oral surgery)
Metacam is a NSAID and cats do have have the liver enzymes to
break it down and it goes to their kidneys and can cause renal failure
and death.
So...as anyone can imagine I FEEL HORRIBLE about giving this to Jinx.
He is fine at the moment.
But, I am not.

I should know better.
This isn't the first time I've had a Vet give me medication that was questionable.

Can anyone give me feedback on experiences with ORAL metacam?

Here is what the FDA says:

FDA Announces Addition of Boxed Warning to METACAM® (meloxicam) Labels

October 27, 2010
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced today the addition of a boxed warning to the label of two METACAM® (meloxicam) products. The drug’s manufacturer, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. (B.I.V.I.), changed the label to include:
WARNING
Repeated use of meloxicam in cats has been associated with acute renal failure and death. Do not administer additional injectable or oral meloxicam to cats. See Contraindications, Warnings, and Precautions for detailed information.
The label change affects:
  • METACAM® Solution for Injection, under New Animal Drug Application (NADA) 141-219; and
  • METACAM® Oral Suspension, under NADA 141-213.
Boxed warnings on prescription drug labels highlight for prescribers certain contraindications or adverse drug events, especially those that may cause death or serious harm. A contraindication occurs when the risk of using the drug in a patient outweighs any benefit. An adverse drug event, also called an adverse drug experience, occurs when there is an undesired side effect associated with the drug, or when there is a lack of effect (the drug does not do what it is supposed to do).
FDA asked B.I.V.I. to add the boxed warning based on FDA’s review of reported adverse drug events for METACAM®. FDA identified many cases of kidney failure and death in cats associated with repeated use of METACAM®.
METACAM® Solution for Injection is approved for one-time use in cats before surgery to control postoperative pain and inflammation associated with orthopedic surgeries, spays, and neuters. In the United States, the safety and effectiveness of more than one dose of METACAM® Solution for Injection has not been shown in cats for any condition.
METACAM® Solution for Injection and METACAM® Oral Suspension are approved in dogs to control pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis. METACAM® Oral Suspension is approved for dogs only. No safe and effective dose of the oral suspension is approved for cats.
FDA is aware that some veterinarians prescribe or use METACAM® in an extra-label manner. When an approved drug is used in a manner other than what is stated on the label, it is an extra-label (or “off-label”) use. Under certain circumstances, veterinarians are allowed to use a drug in an extra-label manner. The new boxed warning on the METACAM® labels helps inform veterinarians of the serious risks associated with extra-label use of meloxicam in cats.

    Not Where You Belong

Abby and Jinx heading towards Boo (at doorway)

Boo says I'm not about to get ambushed!

Flies through the air, as Abby looks on.

    What Mom?

    Boo YOU can't stay there.
(and I encouraged her off of the stovetop)
