High Flight — John Gillespie Magee, Jr
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
It is almost impossible to believe it is 25 years ago. I still remember that day quite clearly. Thank you for your post and reminder.
ReplyDeletePS - it really isn't Simba who remembers, but Mom.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't around then, but Dad and Mom were. They said they will always remember that day.
ReplyDeleteOur mom remembers it like yesterday and in fact just said to her neighbor that she thought the news must have made a mistake with the date. She said, "Wasn't it only about 6 yrs ago?" She says she was watching the lift off on tv and it was so devastating that she wasn't even sure it was true. She cried for days.
ReplyDeleteSam & I think it was really, REALLY good of you to remember them today.
xoxoxo
