The Bite

Bad girl!

Last night after 9PM EST I was sitting with Abby in my lap giving her a good scritch in a place on her lower neck that she was enjoying when all of a sudden she seized a hold of my lower wrist and bit. Now this isn't unusual for her to be bitey, but in the past when she has 'bitten' it was more like a pinch, it would hurt but the skin would not be broken. She had my wrist in her mouth and she had her claws in me and I told her to let go and pulled back but not quickly. Well that got her all the more worked up and she attacked the top and bottom of my wrist with vigor and bit D-O-W-N and shook my wrist like it was food. She did this twice and she grabbed a hold again with her claws. After that it was all over. I mean this took all of 20 seconds if that. I was trying to minimize the damage without getting hurt, well I got hurt anyway. I mean it really hurt, and I'm sure any of you who have been bitten known what I'm saying. I went in and immediately cleaned up the wounds with alcohol and then some bedadine. But it really hurt through the night I could not stand anything to touch it. This morning when I got up it was swollen, inflamed and really hurting. So I called the doctor and they saw me right away. They all told me that anytime you have a cat bite seek medical attention. As you will see if you wish to look below at the two images my Doctor drew some lines around the two areas and said if the inflammation goes beyond that point GO TO THE ER! So she said she was putting me on some very strong antibiotics and I should see a decrease perhaps as early as tomorrow. So, I just wanted to let efurryone know that I will be a little slow on making many comments over the weekend. If you are squeamish do not look at the two pictures down below.

  3. Oh OUCH!! Not sure if you ever saw the post on my blog (30th August) but when I was trimming Mr Darcy's nails he got spooked and managed to kick me in the eye leaving a nasty gash!
It was a freak accident and I couldn't get angry at Darcy for it, but I ended up in A&E and on strong antibiotics because they said that his claws may have had saliva on them.
Luckilly the antibiotics did the trick and I healed up quickly - hope that all goes well for you too!

  4. Molly bit me once when she got spooked and I was trying to calm her, it was so bad I had to go to the after hours clinic and was prescribed TWO kinds of antibiotics. The doctor said to me the only thing worse than a cat bite is a human bite. My finger was like a throbbing sausage. I know your pain friend and wish you a speedy recovery.

  8. Abby, you've got to behave! I'm sure you didn't mean it, but our humans aren't tough like we are--you've got to be super-gentle when you put the bitey on them! Maybe stick to headbumps from now on.

Abby's mom, please take good care of the bite, take all of you medicines, and go to the doctor ASAP if it gets any worse!

    Purrs,

    Tober

  9. Oh Abby we didn't know you were still bitey. Oh poor Mom.
Mom's doctor said any cat bite needs to be looked at right away, so we agree with your doctor. We hope it heals quickly.
Abby! Don't do that again! OK?

  11. Ouch! Sorry you got such a bad hurty. I tend to get bitey, and sometimes I get out of control. So far, I haven't made bad puncture wounds, but my Mommeh knows it could happen. Feel better soon!

  12. OUCH! Didn't Abby bite you earlier this year too, quite a serious bite? Not quite as serious as this, if we recall, but still quite nasty. Or maybe we're thinking of someone else.

We're sending you healing purrs and are crossing our paws that you recover quickly, no further visit to the doctor or worse, the ER, needed.

(((Hugs))) to you and kitty kisses to Abby.

  13. That looks painful!!! Yeah, we are kitties, not snakes, but our bites can be pretty darn poisonous. It sounds like Abby got overstimulated. I know it sounds totally counterintuitive, but when a cat chomps down on you, push your hand or other involved body part in the direction of her mouth. That is actually a better way to make her let go - pulling away makes the cat bite down harder.

I hope the antibiotics make the inflammation go down fast! Purrs to you (and to Abby too - I'm sure she had no idea what she was doing).

  14. OWW!!!That looks painful. Georgia used to be a biter--but she was really good about not breaking the skin (but boy could she make it hurt). You used to just have to sit there in agony until she decided to let up--somehow the skin never got broken.

  15. yikes - that is a serious bite. It's good you went to the doc right away. I've heard that too about cat bites - get to the doctor right away as it's very infectious. Mario started out a biter too (he still is but he has no teeth) when we first got him. Some of his bites never broke skin, but were done with force. Mario to Abby: Sweetie - what is with you? You should NOT bite the hand that feeds you. Use your hisser instead. It's just as effective, but doesn't hurt the ooman. Sorry - no smooches until you have been a good girl for a whole day - maybe tomorrow you'll earn a Mario smooch. Tell mom not to worry about visiting bloggies - she needs to get well first.

  16. Our mom knows this oh so well! Scooter, the cat that came before us, bit her several different times. She would go to the dr. and they did exactly what your dr. did...drew lines and said if the red went outside the lines to see a dr. immediately! One time Scooter bit mom's hand and it swelled up but mom didn't go to the dr. After a couple of days, the swelling went away, but then 2 weeks later, it swelled up again and got really bad and mom had to see a hand dr. who told her NEVER EVER ignore a cat bite! That bite was really bad and mom learned her lesson!!

We know Abby didn't mean to bite you hard like that...she musta been really overstimulated!! And we hope your wrist feels better soon. Good thing you went to the dr.!!

  20. O! We are so sorry you got bitten! It looks really painful. Don't worry about comments or posting either. We didn't realize how bad bites are until Julie bit Mica Moo last year and she nearly died. It was horrible! Just take care of yourself.

  25. Thank you for telling me about this in your comment on Admiral's page. With things going the way they are around here..I haven't been everywhere I needed to be and I was unaware. Thank you too for the warning and while I have been oinched, I have not been bitten badly like that. It just makes me cringe. I am so so sorry.

Love and hugs and purrs and prayers,
