The screen grab is Boo's test results.
There are a few things that are not within the normal readings.
The first thing is that her calicum level is 12.7 mg/dL, the
normal range is 8.2-10.8.
This could indicate several things: Hypercalcemia,(which is
excessive calicum in the blood) parathyroid, renal problems or
neoplasia (cancer).
The Hypercalcemia can be idiopathic.
The other things that jump out are within the Urinalysis.
Her protein is 7.5, normal range is 5.5-7.0.
Her protein level is +1.
These may indicate Proteinuria or CKD.

Does anyone have any kitties who have had numbers like these?
***
I spoke at length finally with the DR yesterday.
He seemed to want to believe that these indicated cancer.
I am not completely certain of that.
I am not going to jump immediately to the worst possible scenario.
I want to do her blood work again -- fasting this time -- and see
what results we get.
At the time I talked with him I did not realize that her Urinalysis
sample was skewed too.
So now I have concerns about that.
Again I think they will rerun these to see what it shows.
***
She has lost weight, but it's been subtle.
What has begun happening is she is bring up her breakfast about
4-5 hours after she has eaten.
It is food and then some phlegm.
***
She vomited 5 days straight, and then stopped for 3 days, and
vomited again. I found it odd her vomiting after so many hours
of her eating.
She is very hungry, and she is having no litterbox issues.
***
So if anyone has any ideas or any experience with any of this please
give me your thoughts.
Thank you.
Oh poor Boo. We will purr that you are going to be okay. We are no help with that but we hope your vet can find out what is going on.
ReplyDeletePoor Boo. We don't have any experience with those kind of results.
ReplyDeleteThere seem to be many reasons for a higher blood calcium reading (Mommy read that here : http://catexpert.blogspot.com/2011/12/hypercalcemia-in-cats.html
We hope a fasting blood test and a rerun of her urine test will help in getting a clearer picture of what is happening. Purring for Boo!
You might want to take her to another vet for a second opinion - it sounds like your current vet is sort of guessing about what is going on - and the numbers could mean different things. In any case, I am sending lots of purrs Boo's way. I hope somebody can figure out what is going on so she can feel better.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I haven't had any experience with labs like Boo's.
ReplyDeleteGrayson has gone through two separate periods where he was vomiting to the point of bile. The two episodes were about a year apart. The labs were inconclusive. My vet gave him anti-nausia shot and that did stop the vomiting. After a week he was back to his usual self.
Having the right Vets is wonderful and I just love mine, but as I experienced many times over the last 40 years, sometimes they can run all sorts of tests and still not KNOW what it is you're dealing with and they just have to treat the symptoms.
As a Kitty Mom (or Dog Mom as I was for more than 30 years), you just have trust your instincts and do what you think is best based on the information you have at the time.
big hugs xoxo
The throwing up when not on a full stomach made our head peep think of acid stomach, which she's seen in CKD cats (but probably happens in others, too... cats are so complicated). Our vet treated it with famotidine (Pepcid AC) which helped a lot with nausea, especially nausea at mealtime to help get kitties to eat.
ReplyDeleteA second opinion is always a good idea when results aren't clear. We'll purr that Boo feels better soon and for you, too, because we know you're worrying.
No, don't panic and assume the worst at this stage. It's definitely a good idea to fast her and recheck, because to my mind, that protein level, for instance, isn't hugely over the norm. But I don't have experience with results like this.
ReplyDeleteAnd ditto on the second opinion--after my experiences with Annie, I will advocate for that, no question.
Sending hugs and purrs and universal Light to Boo and to you.
We hope they figure it out and that it's something treatable. We agree, a second opinion might be a good idea.

We hope your vet finds out what is ailing Boo - could her tummy be too acidic?
ReplyDeleteLuv Hannah and Lucy xx xx
May I have your email please? My Admiral had hypercalcimia. Those were her exact numbers. Her vet said they thought that the testing went askew so they sent a fasting blood sample to the University of Michigan..No, Michigan State University..sorry..and it was tested and turned out positive. He too thought perhaps cancer. Didn't seem to be.
ReplyDeleteI am caroletn at yahoo dot com
Boo. I am sending strong purrs and LOTS of love precious girl.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry about this. I would definitely get a second opinion from another vet that comes recommended if possible. CKD and renal issues are pretty much the same thing. They indicate kidney failure but usually you see elevated creatinine. I think the consistent throwing up is a big concern, but could be due to many different things. Again, if you could see another doctor, maybe an internist.
ReplyDeleteOh, good advice from Katie's mom. I just reread your note about her throwing up several hours after eating. That is very common with kidney problems. They get stomach acid and need to eat often and many take something like Pepcid. That's getting ahead, but just wanted to mention it. In the meantime it may not hurt to have food available to her around the clock to see if it helps. Also, if it is kidney failure, that is very manageable usually for a long time.
ReplyDeleteWe're sending purrs for Miss Boo--it looks like you have gotten some good advice and we also think a second opinion is an excellent idea.
ReplyDeleteOH NO MISS BOO BLESS YOUR HEART I AGREE WITH YOUR MOM ON THE RETEST WITH FASTING.... MY HUMAN SIS'S KITTY HAD SOME SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH VOMITING HOWEVER HE WAS ABOUT 3 OR 4 YEARS OLD. AFTER MANY MANY TESTS IT WAS DETERMINED HE HAD IBD AND HE WAS DIABETIC...IN 2005 HE WAS DOWN TO 6 LBS BUT WE ARE HAPPY TO SAY WITH DIET(HE CAN ONLY TOLERATE KIBBLE MADE FROM DUCK) AND INSULIN HE IS NOW 13LBS....MAYBE A SHADE OVER AN IDEAL WEIGHT BUT HIS MOM IS JUST GLAD HE IS THRIVING.
ReplyDeleteWE LOOK FORWARD TO NEW TESTS.
HUGS MADI YOUR BFFF
We don't have experience with such numbers, but it looks like you've gotten some really good advice from Katie's Mommy. We absolutely recommend getting a second opinion.
ReplyDeleteBig hugs, purrs and prayers that you can get this all sorted out, and that Boo can feel better very soon.
We agree with the retesting and a second opinion for a second Vet. Purrs, prayers and hugs to yiu Miss Boo.
ReplyDeleteOh Boo, we are so sorry, but I sure would get the testing done again. And maybe Katie's mom can shed some light on it for you. We sure do send tons and tons of purrs and prayers your way Boo. Thinking about you. Take care.
ReplyDeletePLEASE do get a second, even third opinion...it's worth it.
ReplyDeleteWe agree with those who are saying to get a second (and third) opinion.
ReplyDeleteI so wish we could be of some help
Sending you purrs and prayers for Boo to be well!
xoxoxo
I don't have experience with that but all of my kitties are revving up their purr motors and sending lots of love your way!! I sincerely hope you can get a diagnosis soon, and that it is NOT cancer.
ReplyDeleteOur Madison, who died of lymphoma, lost weight very, very gradually. And by the time we noticed he had lost a lot, it was too lated to do anything. He died 13 days after his diagnosis. I don't remember if he had been vomiting or not. Not to be an alarmist, but I'd sure stay on top of this just as you are doing. I am going to be praying hard for Boo that all end up to be okay. Janet and kitties
ReplyDeleteoh pretty Boo, we is purring that new test results will be better

Hello Abby, thanks so much for visiting us today we really appreciated your comment!
ReplyDeletePurrs, Kitty
Awww dear, sweet Boo. I'm so sorry to hear about all these problems. M says she sympathizes with you because she knows how she would feel if my tests came back like that. M says her thoughts and prayers will be with you and Boo. Hugs for mom.
ReplyDeleteI concur with the other comments for another opinion. I'll pass this on to our vet. Tests are only one way to determine a diagnosis and they can change. Our Gris Gris was diagnosed with hyperthyroid and the next time he was tested it was normal. Sending purrs to you both.
ReplyDeleteWe think you have gotten some good advice from others. We also agree a second opinion may be helpful. We're purring for Miss Boo and hope whatever is going on with here is treatable.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have any advice but we are sending double purrs for you Boo!
ReplyDeleteOh we're so sorry to hear about Boo's vomiting and test results. We agree about the second opinion and are so very glad you have Katie's mom to talk to. We will be purring hard for you...
ReplyDeleteWe are sending healing purrs to Boo and will be keeping all of you in our thoughts.
ReplyDeleteWe think your vet is jumping the gun a bit at this stage of diagnosis. Definitely do the fasting test. We also think a 2nd opinion might be a very good idea.
ReplyDeleteDo you have a university vet school nearby?
Boo sweetheart we are sending you much love and many rumbly purrs. We hope there is nothing seriously wrong and you feel better soon
