Abby loved drinking from the faucets.
This was taken in our old kitchen before we remodeled.
***
A lasting memory she gave me was the day before she left for the Bridge.
***
It was Sunday, August 11th. Nearly one month ago.
She had gotten up out of the chair she had been in nearly all day.
She headed towards the door. Then she sat down. She was exhausted.
I had a cup of water for myself and I went over to the sink to refill it.
When she heard me turn the water on, she got up,which I now know was
very hard for her, and came towards me by the sink. I knew exactly what she wanted.
You see she used to do this every evening. It was a ritual.
So I gently picked her up and put her on the counter top. She came over to
the tap and I cupped my hands together, so she could drink out of them.
She was so tired, she could barely stand. It was one moment of clarity that
I had when I saw how much her illnesses had taken it's toll of her. But, that
veil of knowledge was briefly dimmed because I wanted to see how
hard she was trying. She drank and drank and I was so glad we had this
moment, especially now. She so loved getting that fresh drink herself.
Then I picked her up and told her proud I was of her and carried her back to the chair.
This is such a special bittersweet memory but ONE I am honored Abby gave me, one last time.

Abby,
I love you
to the
MOON
and back
again
and again
and
again.
You were very kind to Abby. I think that cats love simple pleasures and routine and being able to drink from the faucet was one of those for her. Our Iggy cat loved drinking out of the bathtub when he could no longer jump to the bathroom sink as his kidneys started to fail.
ReplyDeletei am very sure that abby loved you as best she could. you were lucky to have so many wonderful memories together.
ReplyDeleteemma and buster
Whitey also enjoyed faucets! I think Abby and Whitey must be hanging out together, checking out all the good faucets and comfy chairs!
ReplyDeleteSweet Abby. I bet it made her happy to know that you loved her so much that you'd turn on the faucet for her.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely moment you shared.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know Abby was a faucet kitty! How lovely of you to help her have her drink.
ReplyDeleteAbby was lucky to have you as her mom :) You knew what she needed.

We don't remember hearing before that Abby loved faucet drinks! We're sure that it meant a lot to her that she was able to have a faucet drink even when she couldn't jump up to get it herself.
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful memory of sweet Abby. :)
ReplyDeleteAwww angel Abby!! You were and are such a brave brave girl! Take care

ReplyDeleteABBY WAS THE MOST DIGNIFIED AND SELF CONFIDENT LITTLE TUXIE....I SURELY KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT HER BEING TIRED...THAT WAS HOW WE JUDGED MILKY-WAYS FINAL DAYS. HE LOVED BEING IN MY LAP..ON THE WEEKEND WE BROUGHT HIM HOME TO SAY GOODBYE..HE TRIED SO HARD TO JUMP IN MY LAP...ABOUT 10"..HE COULD NOT DO IT FELL BACKWARDS. That is a very sweet moment that you both shared together. My Sadie who passed over the Bridge in 2006 also loved to drink from the faucet...my other cats don't for some reason.
ReplyDeleteMy Lumpy always enjoyed drinking fresh and flowing water from the faucet. I would leave it running just a little for him, especially as he became dehydrated from kidney failure towards the end. I too have fond memories of us at the sink.
