Our Not So Good Lousy Week

Annabelle and I had a time of it last week and well,
to be honest this week probably won't be a whole lot
better.

***
Last weekend I noticed she was 'off' and not wanting to
eat. So I called on Saturday to talk with her Vet office.
They didn't have an opening until the following Friday,
so I said I knew they had "emergency" visits that had an
additional "FEE" and what was the availability of that?
I was told it was a first come first serve from 9-12 and 2-4.
(To be honest with you I think this is a way for them
to make an additional $20 off of you)
Anyway I took her in on Monday.

***
It was a strange visit but then it was an emergency visit.
They took her to the back but let me sit in a room by myself.
The Vet came in briefly to see me and told me Annabelle
had a bad tooth and to schedule a dental as it needed to be
removed. Gave me antibiotics and metacam for pain.

***
Dental couldn't be scheduled until April 21st.
Yeah nearly two weeks at that point.
All I could do was schedule it and hope the pain
in Annabelle's mouth subsided.

***
It did.
BUT.....she got very sick with diarrhea.
I mean it was awful.
For her and for me.
I had to put her in the bathroom overnight
and when I got up the next morning.
Let's just say it was a disaster zone.
Her bottom was caked so I had no
choice but to give her a bath to her bottom.
Welp there was blood shed.
Mine.
It was a low point.
She was soaking wet and I was wounded.
But she got her butt washed.

***
I tried to call the Vet office, left a message.
She continued to have issues.
I stopped both antibiotics and pain meds.
She needed to get her system back in line.
I had to put her back into the bathroom that next
night.

***
I set up cameras both nights to keep an eye on her.
She managed to knock off one of the
cameras into her water bowl so I'm one
camera down now.
*sigh*

***
But she nearly back to her normal self on Friday.
It felt like such a (short term) relief.
I called the Vet office BACK because I had
called from the day before & not heard back.
The techs were real nice, and it turned out
that the Tech called me back not the Vet as I
requested. I mean c'mon. I know it's not the
Tech's fault, and I didn't even suggest it was
to her or even now, but I needed to talk to
the Vet. I had questions about the Dental.
I wanted to make sure they knew no more
metacam. Annabelle can't tolerate it.

***
So even though the Vet said to keep up the antibiotics
I didn't. I will start her up on them again
next week prior to Thursday when she goes in
for the Dental. I don't know how good I feel
about this, but she's got to get this done.

***
I may be shopping for a new Vet.
BTW this Hospital, has 5-6 Vets. You never know
who you'll see. I mean if you have plenty of
time you can request a certain Vet but you'll wait for
a few weeks to get an appointment.
I understand if it's just a routine appointment,
but most of the time a pet becomes sick
and you need to be seen as soon as possible.
So I can see ASAP means an additional $20.
Which is on top of their $75 normal "wellness check".

***
I don't know about anyone else but it's hard budget
wise right now and I'm not saying I won't give my
girls their medical care, but between all of this and the Dental
(which is four figures depending on the # of teeth they pull)
I'm about tapped out.
I mean there goes the cushion.

***
Big huge sigh.
Just want my baby to be OK.

  1. Oh, dear. POTP and pawyers for sweet Annabelle.

I hate the vet practices too that have so many vets...I was going to one like that, but I changed to a one vet place, and things are much better...at least for who one gets to see...but the pockets still have to be deep...though I have not heard about the extra fees for emergencies. However if its after hours and the practice is not on call (They all rotate with that ere in our city), then we have to drive 30 miles to the nearest emergency vet. I pray I never have to do that...

  2. I'm so sorry you and Annabelle are having to go through all of this. Since Covid, vet service has gotten so bad. There are fewer of them, protocols are draconian, and if you have an emergency, you are really in trouble. My human thinks the vets seriously failed Boodie when she was going downhill and had to be put down in late 2020 - she was lucky that at least there was a home vet who could come by and put an end to her suffering.

  3. So sorry to hear Annabelle is having such a hard time.
The Vet office is not helping :/
I do hope Annabelle can get some relief soon.

  4. Ugh, we're sorry about this debacle. What is it with vets anyway? It's HARD to find good care, and the biped certainly understands the financial challenges.

We're sending you both lots of Light and purrs, hoping that Annabelle's dental goes well. Maybe there is another kind of antibiotic that will be easier on her system? BTW, the biped does not recall any vet ever prescribing antibiotics before a dental--and that includes those with multiple extractions.

    Good luck. ♥

  5. Deb, please. Start NOW calling around to which ever vet offices are within your reach. Ask all their policies when you do. I had to do that. You definitely need another vet office. That which was told to you as well as the delays when she is sick, plus charging extra as if they were the 24 hr. Emergency Vet, is unconscionable. What you and certainly your baby went through can happen, yes, even with the best of vets. They can't always know usually, which meds will have an effect like that. But ther delays, the money grubbing, the lack of care for you and Annabelle...ho needs that? They have no loyalty to you and Annabelle...time to move on. I have been in those shoes too.

  10. It was indeed a terrible week, and I hope it is improving.

I know exactly what you mean. The cats are a top priority, but one simply needs to husband ones money; it can't all go at once. One has to judge what can be paid for and what can be delayed.

I agree with Katie Isabella: I would look for a new vet immediately. This one seems too money-oriented and unconcerned.

  12. Purrs and prayers to sweetie Annabelle. We understand the Vet thing, I've fired more than I've kept and I'm on the 4th Vet for Seal. Seal's 2nd Vet charged $75 additional for an Urgent Care Visit. The 3rd Vet never got back to us with blood work results. Appointment with the 4th Vet is on Monday so we'll see if I will be shopping for number 5. I won't tolerate incompetence or greediness. My healthcare is cheaper that the kitties.

  14. I’m sorry Annabelle is having these issues. And that the vet isn’t being responsive. It’s so frustrating. Hopefully the dental will help her and you can find a new better vet.

  15. What a horrible time you and Annabelle are having of it. We are so sorry, especially because your vet doesn't seem to be very helpful or empathetic. Sending lots of love, and big purrs and prayers.
