Abby's Temper Part 2

She was back to her normal Manx self when I got home. She was waiting patiently at the door for me when I came in and made all kinds of happy sounds when she saw me. I fed her like normal and she was quite happy about having her wet food (I only give her a little bit once a day because it is too rich for her system -- anyone with a Manx will know what I mean). Then she was ready to sit down and curl up in my lap and give me kitty kisses. She was totally devoted to me and everything was completely normal. Of course, I realize that she didn't give her actions from yesterday morning any further thought, whereas I thought about it and tried to analzye it. So, tell me who is the smarter one here?

Abby's Temper

Abby came to us through a rescue group, her former family relinquished her because she was "too affectionate". Her manner is typical of the Manx. She is a cat that wants to be a part of whatever you are doing. She has one behavior that is difficult to understand, she will bite or nip. I have been working diligently with her since June, and her nips have nearly stopped, but this morning she bite me and she meant it. Her former owner told me that she would nip, and that they controlled this by "bopping" her on the nose, well if someone was hitting me, I would nip at them too. So, I understood her nipping. But, I am at a loss to understand why she bit me this week. I had offered her my arm which is what she generally likes, because she will come up and head butt me and then I will slowly pet her on top of the head, and rub along her jaw, which is what she really likes. When I offered her my arm she bite my wrist and then grabbed me with her paw. Her claw got hung up on my clothing and then she bit me again and then finally in my struggle to move away from her she stumbled and she got me one last time. She made several small scratch marks, and to be honest I am not sure if it was from her claws or teeth. If she had really MEANT to bite I am sure she could have gone through my wrist pretty cleanly, but she didn't go that far. I am just confused by her behavior, and I don't know what I did to spark her reaction. I know that in her mind she had a good reason for doing what she did, but she has me totally perplexed, and she hurt my feelings. I don't suppose she meant to do that, and in all likelyhood doesn't even understand that principle. I am sure when I see her at home later, she will have totally forgotten the incident, and be her normal self. But, I have to wonder will this happen again?

Friday Cat Blogging -- Don't Mess With Texas

Abby's watching out for you!

It was only a few weeks ago that the Gulf was bracing for Katrina, now we have another monster hurricane feeding off the warm waters of the Gulf and headed towards Texas & Louisana. My heart goes out to all the people being affected by these massive storms. One positive note to see; the officials allowing people to bring their pets out of harms way. Thankfully someone realized that our pets are family too.

Let's keep all the people who will be impacted in our prayers and if you don't pray, then keep them in your thoughts. They need every bit of positive support we can send.

This is Boo on the left and Abby our Manx on the right. Nope, you're not seeing double. They could be twins, except that Boo is almost double Abby's size. Abby is a miniature Manx.

Friday Cat Blogging -- PING S.O.S.

For a little over a year we've happily lived with our 3 cats Boo, Jinx, and Ping. As a short explanation; last summer someone dropped these 3 cats off near our house and they came to live with us. We could only surmise that they had been together their entire lives ( they were not yet a year old according to our vet). Happy we all were, except for one thing, none of them wanted to be a lap cat. So, after a year I began a search to add one more cat to our family. After several months, I adopted Abby from a rescue group. She is our Manx, and she is 6 years old. We took lots of time introducing her to our 3 existing cats. It was over 6 weeks before we allowed them all together unsupervised. As fate would have it, Button, who was another stray that adopted us, became missing this past July. We went to Animal Control in our area to make sure she had not been captured. Unfortunately, we did not find her. But, what we did find was Gracie, who we took home. Gracie is only 6 or 7 months old. We took several weeks to introduce Gracie to everyone, and just this past weekend we allowed Gracie to be unsupervised with all the other cats.

NOW, about Ping -- in late july, he sprayed for the first time, and he has done so a few more times since that date. This last time was this previous weekend. He came and did it on the chair I was sitting in (holding Abby in my lap). I recognize he is upset, troubled, and unhappy about the addition of not ONE, but TWO cats in a very short time. It was not something we had planned to do. He needs help. All of our cats are neutered or spayed. I have gotten Feliway and it helped at first, but it is not working as well now.

Any suggestions to help a poor poodie out?

Spunky Do

Abby is a typical Manx with her beautiful double coat. I love the way it fluffs up when she is in this position. Her fur isn't the only spunky thing about her. Abby IS spunky! She is the alpha cat in our household, and she rules the roost. She is not afraid to speak up and be heard. Her voice is so distintive, and she is very vocal with both sound and deed. But beneath that fiery exterior lies a heart of gold. She is a very sweet and loving girl, and nothing but a small round ball of fur when she settles onto my lap.

Do Not Adjust Your Set-You're Not Seeing Double

Boo & Abby
Boo is my beautiful tuxedo, she is just a little over a year old. We recently adopted Abby, our Manx who just turned six in July. This is the first pictures I have been able to take of the two of them together. They are still adjusting to one another, so it was with great joy when I saw the two of them sunning themselves together. Don't they look like they could be twins?

NOAH'S WISH

Anyone who has loved an animal knows the fear of having to make difficult choices during emergency situations. In the hard hit areas from Katrina, there are untold thousands of cats, dogs, and other pets wandering debris strewn streets, floating in floodwaters, trapped in houses, abandoned during the confusion and evacuation. If this were your pet wouldn't you want someone there to lend a helping hand? Please help the victims that can't speak for themselves, and hug your pet tightly tonight.

Sleeping With The Enemy

How could this be a more serene and loving scene? How peaceful and calm they are when they sleep. If only could have witnessed the behind the scenes manveuring as to who was going to get the best spot on the ottoman. You might have thought this was the Battle of Waterloo.

Ping is the red tabby, and that is Jinx is brother on the right.

Be Prepared

Living in Florida, we learn to live with hurricane season. It is a sometime frightening and worrisome period. Last year our area had 4 brushes with downgraded hurricanes. Frances and Jeanne caused power outages and some minor damages, but otherwise we came out unscathed. At the time of those storms we only had Boo, Ping & Jinx. Since we are in a more active hurricane cycle, I have to be concerned about our safety and welfare and the well being and security of our kitties. If evacuated to a shelter animals are not allowed. We've decided that all 5 go with us NO matter what, and we've prepared for something which I hope never happens. We've determined if a CAT 3 or better heads our way, we will voluntarily evaculate and our cats will be right by our sides. This is our own kitty survival kit

IF YOU EVACUATE, TAKE YOUR PET!!!

The rescue efforts for Katrina are being conducted for human life, and even then the rescuers are having to make difficult choices. My heart goes out to the tradegy of the situation, but I can't help but have concern for our fur friends who are also displaced. I hope everyone with give or donate to the relief efforts.
Charity see the need not the cause. Please give and give again.
